Identifying the person’s support networks

Finding out about people significant to the person is important, taking into consideration the type and strength of the relationship and who might provide the most appropriate support when needed. This can be done through an eco-map which is a diagram used to show the social and personal relationships of an individual with their environment.  As a visual tool it can be used as a participatory way for individuals to describe and organize the various people impacting their lives. Eco-maps place the person at the centre, and visually show the key social and personal relationships that the person has with their environment that could be drawn upon to provide support.
