Communication strategies

Communication strategies for advocating to health care providers for people who are homeless are:

  • be prepared and organized to speak about the situation
  • be clear about the questions to be asked of the health care provider
  • be assertive and comfortable in interacting with doctors and other health care providers
  • be professional yet confident in interacting with health care providers. This means being respectful when communicating, avoiding using curse words and yelling, listening effectively and not being scared to ask questions
  • be positive and thankful for assistance
